Why handfasting is the perfect symbolic ritual for nature-loving couples in the North West

Handfasting rituals offer a unique way to celebrate love, especially for couples who feel a deep connection to nature. Whether you are planning a handfasting in Manchester, Derbyshire, or Yorkshire, this ritual can beautifully enhance your special day. The North West offers so many spectacular locations to serve as the backdrop for your wedding day.
As an award-winning LGBTQ+ friendly wedding celebrant, I love this inclusive ritual and have hosted handfasting ceremonies across the North West...and even on top of a mountain in Austria!
Why choose a handfasting ritual for your wedding?
Handfasting rituals are perfect for nature-loving couples for several reasons:
Connection to the Earth
Both Celtic and pagan traditions (where handfasting originate from) are deeply rooted in nature. You might choose to have your handfasting in the hills of Derbyshire, the Yorkshire Dales, or on the moorland.
Personal and inclusive
Handfasting can be tailored to include readings, blessings, or vows that reflect your unique relationship. As an LGBTQ+ friendly Manchester celebrant, I ensure that every ceremony is inclusive and celebrates love in all its forms.
A meaningful keepsake
You can keep your handfasting cord in your home for years to come, as a reminder of your loving promises.
Versatility
Whether you are planning a large wedding, an intimate micro wedding, or an elopement, handfasting is a beautiful, simple ritual to add some magic to your ceremony.
Vows to tie the knot
Traditional Celtic blessings
Personal vows that reflect your journey together
Decide who will perform the handfasting
As your wedding celebrant, I will guide you through the handfasting ceremony, ensuring it flows naturally and feels authentic. You may also choose to involve close friends or family members to participate in the tying of the cords.
Where to have your handfasting in Manchester, Derbyshire, and Yorkshire
The beauty of handfasting is the freedom it brings. You can have your handfasting ceremony anywhere! But may I suggest:
Manchester: Saddleworth is a rugged landscape steeped in folklore, with dramatic peaks and steep valleys, where ghosts are said to roam and the locals left offerings to the fairy folk up on the Pots and Pans rock formations. Closer to Manchester, you have the choice of green spaces like Heaton Park or Fletcher Moss for your handfasting.
Derbyshire: The Peak District’s green, rolling hills and ancient woodlands create a breath-taking setting for couples wanting a rustic, nature-filled experience. Think Kinder Scout and Edale for your handfasting location.
Yorkshire: Romance on an epic, windswept scale (Wuthering Hights!) From the moors to the dales, Yorkshire offers dramatic landscapes perfect for couples seeking a wild and romantic backdrop.
In my experience, couples often choose locations that hold personal significance or offer privacy for their micro weddings or elopements. The handfasting ritual becomes a moment of calm and connection amid the beauty of the natural world.
