Pre-wedding nerves? Why booking a celebrant can help calm those jitters

There's no getting away from it...your wedding day is a big deal. Huge. Absolutely massive with enormous bells hanging off it! For many people, the thought of speaking in front of a crowd might make their mouth go dry. Perhaps it's the overwhelming thought of something going wrong on this all-important day...gulp.

Wherever your nerves stem from, there's one thing that you can certainly control...the celebrant you book. Your celebrant is there to lead your ceremony for you and to handle issues if anything goes wrong. It's their job.

But, how can a celebrant really help to soothe your worries?

  1. Public speaking: If it's public speaking that makes you nervous, a celebrant can help you to prepare and go over any part of the ceremony script as many times as you need. Practice is key to speaking confidently in public. If you really want to minimise the amount of time you actually spend talking during your ceremony, communicate this to your celebrant. Throughout your ceremony, they do the heavy lifting when it comes to telling your story and coordinating the flow of the ceremony. You don't need to worry about any of that and your airtime can be minimal, if that's what how you want to do it.

  2. Reading out your own vows: What if you try to write your own vows and you get stuck for something to say? Fortunately, celebrants support you with writing your own vows and can provide suggestions as to where to start. Celebrants can offer creative ideas to add colour to your vows and promises, and to make them personal to you. They can even write the whole thing! Your vows can be any length that you want them to be, but it's best not to let them go on for too long.

  3. The nitty gritty of your wedding ceremony: Not sure who goes where during the ceremony? Do you stand up the whole time or do you sit down at some point? An important element of the ceremony is the 'stage directions'. Quite simply, a celebrant will include some basic directions in your ceremony script. Of course, if it's your ceremony then you get to decide what happens, but celebrants will be able to give you an idea and suggestions to get started with.

  4. Avoiding awkward, solemn ceremonial pomp: Does the thought of a formal, old-fashioned wedding ceremony give you the ick? Perhaps the serious wedding ceremonies of yore make you feel tense. If that's causing you pre-wedding stress then you have hit the jackpot by booking a celebrant, because a celebrant's job is to craft a ceremony that celebrates you. A celebrant-led ceremony is designed to match your energy...so you don't feel like you're having to fit in with clunky old traditions.

  5. Having someone to rely on: You choose your celebrant and you get to build a relationship with them in the run up to your big day. You pick them based on their personality. By the time you are saying your vows, you will have developed a solid relationship with them and it will (hopefully) feel like you are standing next to a friend who is there to support you. We are your biggest cheerleaders and we are there to help with anything that you need!

  6. Navigating stress: Celebrants work closely with couples in the run-up to their wedding, so we see a lot of nerves jangling around. It's only natural! If you're anxious about things like family drama, then let your celebrant and wedding vendors know...your seating arrangement and coordination can help to smooth over bumps/ potential awkwardness. More generally, we've got advice on handling those pesky jitters and can help you through those feelings with tried-and-tested coping techniques for anxiety.

But remember that this day is a celebration of you! It's completely normal to be nervous but a celebrant-led wedding really can look however you want it to.
