No matter how you envisage your wedding, there's probably a celebrant out there to match your vision for your big day. While celebrants vary in the type of ceremony they offer, the vibe they bring to your wedding, and their personality and style, there are a couple of things to consider before you go ahead and book one.
Availability
It may seem obvious but firstly, make sure that the celebrant you've got your eye on is available for your chosen wedding date. At wedding fairs, you can just ask them straight up if they are free on that day, or a quick email/ call should do it.
For the love of Saint George Michael, don't book a celebrant who takes more than one wedding booking per date! You do not want them showing up late to your ceremony because their earlier booking overran.
Style, personality, and ceremony type
If a celebrant has caught your attention, it may be because you love the style of ceremony that they deliver, or their personal look and branding.
Social media and websites are a great way to 'look in the shop window' and get an overview of a celebrant's work, but the best way to make sure they match your energy is to book a short, free intro call. Any good celebrant will offer this...it's important for you to see if you get along with each other and if they work in a way that suits your plans. When you think about it, your celebrant's personality is a really important part of your ceremony.
Perhaps they have hosted wedding ceremonies that are similar to how you want your big day to look, but don't let this be the only deciding factor; a celebrant can personalise your ceremony (and often, their own outfit!) to align with your vision for your wedding.
Money, money, money
Ooh, what a dirty word! But, it's important stuff, especially when it comes to weddings and suppliers. Your budget obviously dictates a lot of the decision making when it comes to choosing any wedding supplier, but it's up to you to decide how you portion up your allocated funds.
Is it important to you to have a ceremony that reflects your personality; something memorable, filled with laughter? Obviously, I vote for that option!
Or will you be spending most of your budget on the venue of your dreams, leaving a smaller segment for other parts of your big day?
Also consider value for money. If a celebrant costs slightly more, do they offer a better quality service/ more varied/ in-depth wedding packages? Probably best to swerve the Poundland end of the pricing scale, when it comes to choosing the person who will officiate the biggest day of your life.
Experience
Celebrants can undergo training to gain accreditation in their profession, but not all do. Has your chosen celebrant got the relevant training and qualifications?
I completed my Wedding Celebrant training with the Academy of Modern Celebrancy, which gave me in-depth knowledge about ceremonies, supporting couples, navigating challenges that arise and other important aspects such as insurance and legal considerations.
You don't have to choose an accredited wedding celebrant, but it certainly helps.
Also, does your celebrant have experience and reviews that speak to you? Take a look and do some research. Your wedding ceremony is one of your big life moments, after all.
